El proyecto que concluyó en mayo de 2016 fue lanzado en enero del 2008 por IBM, Nokia, Pitney Bowes y SONY, en colaboración con la WBCSD, (World Business Council for Sustainable Development) para promover la cooperación y colaboración entre las compañías en la realización de acciones conjuntas para el desarrollo de estrategias pro-ambientales. Las patentes forman parte de un archivo o base de datos en el sitio de Eco-Patent Commons. Deben de ser innovaciones que provean de beneficios para el medio ambiente tales como: conservación y eficiencia de la energía, prevención de la contaminación, uso de sustancias o materiales ambientalmente preferibles, reducción de materiales y aumentar la habilidad de reciclado.

Es común que para algunas compañías, estas patentes sean su fuente principal de ganancias, en tal caso no es el propósito de este proyecto exigirles su apertura, sin embargo, existen otras que no se ven afectadas al compartir sus patentes, por lo que este proyecto promueve y les facilita este proceso y convertirse en líderes del desarrollo sustentable.

Aquellas compañías participantes pueden verse beneficiadas a través del reconocimiento global de sus aportaciones, además de poder utilizar un canal eficiente para compartir sus innovaciones, e introducir los conceptos nuevos en el público.

Actualmente algunos de los miembros de Eco-Patent commons icluyen: Bosch, Dow, Fuji Xerox, HP, IBM, Nokia, Pitney Bowes, Ricoh, Sony y Xerox.
