Self-portrait

The Digital Library of Novohispanic Thought (BdPn) is a project that is devoted to the publication of critical editions of texts in print and edited manuscripts. Description

The Digital Library of Novohispanic Thought (Biblioteca Digital del Pensamiento Novohispano, or BdPn) is an active, open-ended project carried in Spanish, that has gone through several development stages, establishing itself as a digital humanities project. First and foremost, it is a reflection of how a corps of students and researchers at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), have adopted the digital humanities, starting with a project to study Mexico’s colonial period and developing the digital tools to do so.

Currently, the BdPn is pursuing the following goals:

1) Producing digital collections of texts originally published in New Spain, transcribed smoothly into XML with TEI markup.

2) Automating text indexing through markups for ease of reading and data compiling.

3) Using markup-generated data, visualizations and other data analysis resources to find out more about the texts, individually or in groups.

4) Training students in the digital humanities, with a special focus on using TEI-XML markup as a reading and studying method.

Every text in the library is under an Open Access and Creative Commons license, with right of use referencing the site, the project’s official name and date of reference. At the moment, the BdPn is not working with common citation standards found in digital humanities projects.
