Self-portrait

Freecast is a Java application which allows peer-to-peer audio broadcast. It's a free software developped by the tryphon.org team and contributors.

The FreeCast challenge is using the internet connection of each listener to provide the audio stream to the other listeners. This collaborative approach is helpful to avoid expensive and heavy network infrastructures needed by conventionnal network broadcasting applications.

Freecast can provide a way to a lot of small organizations to diffuse over Internet radio broadcasting, musical events, etc ... without a financial and technical dependency with a web hoster.

The current objective is providing a flux stream to an hundred of listeners with a simple DSL connection as network base. That implies that a large majority of the users also have a DSL connection.

Description

Freecast P2P radio is an open source java app for peer to peer audio broadcasting. Each listener can provider other users with an audio (Ogg Vorbis) or video (Ogg Theora) stream with a DSL connection, disregarding the need for a server, thus avoiding the significant costs associated with traditional broadcasting infrastructure.

The program was launched September 14, 2004 by Alban Peigner and the tryphon.org team. The website has a reference guide on creating your own network for radio transmissions and event sharing with an unlimited audience. Freecast is aimed at benefiting listeners by making its content easy to access without the need for any configuration. For ease of access, there are automatic downloads and support provided in several languages. FreeCast Manager provides a quick solution by initiating transmission with a single click. Packaged distribution is offered in full download for advanced settings or with a stable network.
