Modern art comes in a wide variety of schools, each following its own rules and broadcasting a specific message. If you are looking for a nice colorful picture to decorate your interior or simply go in for contemporary art, here are five awesome styles you should know about.

Abstract art
Probably the most demanded style of visual art today, abstract painting addresses our mental and emotional sphere depicting notions and feelings that have no physical form. Curious and thought-provoking combinations of colors, lines and images set the viewer on a delightful mind trip as they try to decipher the artist's message. The best thing about it is that each work of art can have numerous interpretations. Among prominent abstractionists, one should definitely mention Pablo Picasso, Vasily Kandinsky and Henry Matisse.

Minimalism
Simplified and reserved, this style strips the object of all its secondary traits leaving only what's important to the artist. Minimalists aim to depict the very essence of things void of any context. In other words, minimalistic works of art show only what they show, nothing more or less. Kazemir Malevich and Piet Mondrian are well-known representatives of the minimalist movement.

Hyperrealism
Using photography as a reference point, hyperrealists create their paintings based on high-resolution shots. The task of the artist is to depict the surrounding world in a lifelike yet exaggerated manner with intense color contrasts, deep shadows and sharp lines thus creating some sort of 'super' reality. The list of most popular names includes Robert Bechtle, Charles Bell and Duane Hanson.

Surrealism
Paintings of this style represent random mixtures of images drawn directly from the subconscious. Often including fantastic themes and elements, they depict reality as a dream striving to reveal its intuitive, irrational side. Some of the most famous surrealists are Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Joan Miro and others.

Impressionism
Born back in the late 19th century, this style discarded the principles of realistic painting and focused on the artist's individual perception expressed through the use of intense color and light effects. Canvases of classic impressionists resemble a motley chaos of strokes that aims to convey the impression from the scene rather than the scene itself. Pioneered by Claude Monet and Pierre Renoir, impressionism has gained a new life in works by Alexander Shandor, Xueling Zou and Leonid Afremov.
There are a whole lot of other styles out there for you to discover and admire! Keep up with the latest news of the painting world, expand your knowledge of modern artists and never stop educating yourself on the beautiful and exciting science of art!
