Nigeria army probes recent Boko Haram strikes




yohaig.ngThe Nigerian Army on Sunday said it's launched a probe into recent assaults by Boko Haram militants which claimed dozens of lives of lives near Maiduguri, capital of northeast Borno state.

At least 85 people died when insurgents torched a village on January 30 and stormed, the third assault in four days had mainly conquered the jihadist group.

"The recent ill-fated attacks by Boko Haram terrorists on communities close to Maiduguri, despite our successes, call for worry," the army said.

"The Nigerian Army has commenced investigation into the assaults... All cases of indiscipline and relevant actions of misconduct including human rights abuse in the operations is going to be tried by the Special Court Martial," said the statement said, without clarifying what the probe was inquiring.

Tens of thousands of individuals have fled their houses near Maiduguri for the capital and many are scared to return, following the recent attacks, despite government guarantees of their safety.

Buhari in December promised that Nigeria had mostly won the fight against Boko Haram, but since the militants have killed dozens in suicide attacks and raids, including over the border in Cameroon.

Rights group Amnesty International has also accused the military itself of perpetrating war crimes and potential crimes against humanity in the length of its operations from the group.

Boko Haram, which seeks a hardline Islamic state in northern Nigeria, has killed some 17,000 people and driven more than 2.6 million others to flee their homes since the beginning of its insurgency in 2009.

THE National Assembly (NASS) will be to make sure that right regulations that could ignite rapid growth and development in the telecommunication sector are pursued vigorously.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Communications, Gilbert Nnaji, who stated this in Abuja in the launch of Airtel Service Centre in the Senate wing of the NASS, said that the committee is focused on promoting an enabling environment that would nurture growth, prosperity and development in the telecommunications sector.

He noted the committee is collaborating with key stakeholders in the sector, especially Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) to commence the overview of the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003.

A UNITED Kingdom based Nigerian, Adebunmi Adeniran, has developed a keyboard enable and to support writing in at least 12 Nigerian languages, with correct signs and tones to give the reader immediate meaning. Investor backs iROKO funding for African content after Netflix arrival


Movie supply service iROKO and Nigerian on-line television on Monday announced $19 million worth of new deals, including with French giant Canal, to improve operations and take-up across Africa.

The deals for capital financing and content development come only weeks after US streaming giant Netflix enlarged to 190 countries, putting them in direct competition with the Lagos-based company.

"We are taking Nollywood content to Africa," iROKO creator Jason Njoku told AFP in an e-mail, referring to Nigeria's domestic film industry.

"We've strategies to dub content into French, Swahili, Zulu -- so we'll stand apart from Netflix in terms of localisation of content. We are not going wide and deep into content that is local.

"However Netflix entering to the African market is truly exciting, as it shows the enormous potential of the market. For us, we are flattered to be mentioned in the same breath as them."

iROKO, whose operation has been dubbed "the African Netflix", said in another statement it planned to make "at least 300 hours of original content in 2016, with the expectation of doubling that by 2018".

Cell phone use has exploded in modern times in Africa and firms for example Njoku's have tapped in to increasing Internet access through smartphones and also the popularity of Nigeria's film industry on the other side of the continent.
