Description

Mexican Biodiversity (Biodiversidad Mexicana) is a website dedicated to the promotion and research on topics regarding Mexico’s biology and geography. The project is run by the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO) and divided in four sections: Events, Topics, Products, Get to Know and Act!. Activities such as conferences, exhibits and others, are published under the Events section.

The Topics section includes twelve other sites dedicated to: Biodiversity, Ecosystems, Species, Genes, Corridor, Region, Country, Planet, Use, Kids, Teachers, and Press. Each portal displays concepts, research studies, images, maps, statistics, references, links and multimedia resources related to each topic.

The Products section offers: an image bank, maps, projects and calls for proposals, broadcast partners, job opportunities, a “Biolibrary” (with publications, music, posters, videos and exhibits), as well as links to other websites.

Under the “Get to Know and Act!” sections, you can browse proposals aimed at educating and raising awareness among children and popular science research projects. Under the “enjoy your fish without harming their populations” sub-section, you will find a portal dedicated to edible fish species in Mexico, which you can browse using the search box. “Become a naturalist!” is linked to the Naturalista popular science project for the observation and monitoring of different species. “Get to know the trees in your city” is linked to the Vecinos Verdes project with information on the different species of trees growing throughout Mexican cities. “Don’t turn your back on your true nature” is linked to the Enciclovida project, a digital platform for identifying and learning about Mexican animals, plants and fungi. “Join our events!” displays a calendar with activities organized by CONABIO. “Take your kids on a trip to Megadiverse Mexico with Curious Tito” is linked to an educational multimedia website for children and teachers called “México, el país de las maravillas” (“Mexican Wonderland”). “Get to know and visit the protected areas of the country” redirects to the website for “Bios: Nature and Society” a television series produced by CONABIO and Canal 22, the episodes of which can be seen online for free. “Travel through the ecosystems of Mexico” is linked to the main Ecosystems section. “Create a pollinator garden!” is a popular science project providing guidelines on how to build a garden that will offer the best possible reproductive conditions for different species of pollinators. “How to be a responsible consumer” is a video with information on consumer responsibilities. “Request an exhibition” offers a collection of on-demand travelling exhibits. “Get to know the conservation priorities of your municipality” is an online “nature and society” atlas. “Have a look at our products” shows the full array of CONABIO’s publications, many of which can be downloaded for free.
