Context

Although more information about codes>alien is unknown, the manifesto was published on the website Alt X (1) and appears on the list of "The Day of the Manifestoes", which is part of the Hybrid Workspace of the Documenta X of Kassel in the year of 1997 (2). Alt-X "Online Network", "Manufactured in Cyberspace", "Where the Digerati Meet the Literati" is a webáge “Made in USA” that was created by Mark Amerika in 1993 with the aim to "challenge the publishing institutions of art and literature by supporting some of the most iconoclastic voices and visions in contemporary art and writing" (3). By the other hand, the Hybrid Workspace was a space dependent on the Documentary X of Kassel in which from June 21 to september 28, 11 groups related with the arts, the Internet and the activism participated with different conferences and workshops, each group had a participation that lasted between 10 and 14 days (4).

Authors

Orphan Drift is a group of artist formed in 1995 that combines different media like the video, instlation and literature in order to produce artistic works (5). The group has venues in London and Oslo, where they ocassionaly invites other artist, musicians and writers with the aim to make new projects. The pieces of the collective are produced to be placed in the space regularly by commission or commercial contracts (5). Currently, Orphan Drift's artistic work focuses on "the encounters between speculative narratives, ecology, the quantum universe, the set of ancient cosmologies, presence and future, and the expanded spatial and temporal scales of geopolitical pressure" (6). The work of the colective has been exhibited in different artistic institutions like Space Gallery, Tate Modern, IMT Gallery in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, etc. (6).
