Description

CIC (Cooperativa Integral Catalana) is a grassroots cooperative started in Catalonia with the goal of inflicting social transformation from the bottom-up through self-management, self-organization and networking.

The CIC was started in 2014 with funds acquired by Enric Duran when he “selflessly scammed” several banks by refusing to pay back a series of loans. The CIC was constituted as a “project for the establishment of a comprehensive alternative to capitalism”, legally structured by different entities (mixed, consumer & user, service co-ops, etc.) functioning as a tool to cover every member’s needs (food, housing, employment, health, education, social services and transportation), progressively severing ties with capitalism. This model works in opposition to the “one project, one cooperative” model by serving more than one person, project or network in their relationship to the State.

The CIC’s background is part of the heritage and knowledge acquired through different projects such as Infoespai, the Altercoms cooperative, Tiempos de Revuelta collective, and the 2008 March for Degrowth. Throughout its history, with assistance from the Crisis collective, many other people and collectives across Spain, the CIC has distributed three important publications: Crisis, Podemos and Queremos. The first mention of comprehensive cooperatives appears on page 14 of Podemos (distributed en masse March 17, 2009). Meanwhile, the rise of several ecoxarxa exchange communities in Tarragona, Montseny and Santa Coloma de Gramenet, provided the momentum the CIC needed, contributing to the reframing of comprehensive cooperatives as a coordination project between ecoxarxas, adapting other proposals to gain independence from capitalism.

At last, the CIC was constituted in May 2010, after five months of meetings. The CIC’s goals are:

-To guarantee everyone can cover their basic needs, contributing according to their means.

-To build, from the bottom-up a society beyond capitalism, self-managing the coverage of basic needs, such as housing, employment, health and education.

-To Restore the notion of the public as common good, free from middlemen, in the hands of the people.

The CIC’s ideological principles are based on the “Integral Revolution” manifesto, a call to create an international political space under the key concepts of self-organization, assembly action and civil disobedience by members of the CIC.
