The Directory of Open Access Journals was launched in 2003 at Lund University, Sweden, with 300 open access journals and today contains ca. 9000 open access journals covering all areas of science, technology, medicine, social science and humanities.
The aim of the DOAJ is to increase the visibility and ease of use of open access scientific and scholarly journals, thereby promoting their increased usage and impact. The DOAJ aims to be comprehensive and cover all open access scientific and scholarly journals that use a quality control system to guarantee the content. In short, the DOAJ aims to be the one-stop shop for users of open access journals.
DOAJ is a not-for-profit organisation managed by Infrastructure Services for Open Access C.I.C. (Community Interest Company) based in the United Kingdom. DOAJ relies entirely on the voluntary donations of its members and on sponsorship monies received. In March 2016, DOAJ received a grant from the IDRC for a specific timed project tackling the improvement of open access journals in the Global South. Neither DOAJ or IS4OA receives grants or funding from any other source.
Description
Directory of Open Access Journals or DOAJ is a project that organizes and allows access to publications on science, technology, medicine and the humanities. The goal is to increase visibility and facilitate the use of high-quality scientific and scholarly open access publications.
DOAJ is a non-profit organization managed by the Community Interest Company Infrastructure Services for Open Access C.I.C. based in United Kingdom. The project started at Lund University in Sweden in 2003 with only 300 publications. The initiative intends to form a rigorous repository of articles committed with quality and "peer review" process. The project has generated review strategies and established parameters such as the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing.
Currently 11003 publications and 20131296 articles reviewed by more than 100 editorial volunteers can be consulted. The project is enriched by collaborations and access to information from colleagues and organizations such as Redalyc, Scielo, Open Journal Systems and Cottage Labs LLC.
DOAJ works with three types of memberships: publisher, ordinary member and sponsor. Some of its editorial members are: Brazilian Journal in Health Promotion, International Journal of Comparative Psychology, Journal of Degraded and Mining Lands Management, Latin Journal of Social Communication, Italian society of Victimology, among many others.
The publications have been organized according to the Library of Congress Classification in subjects that include: agriculture, education, arts, language and literature, medicine, law, philosophy, psychology, religion, social sciences and technology.
