Self-portrait

Description

The UNAM Film Archive (Filmoteca de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) was created for the promotion, preservation, recovery and restoration of Mexican film, finding new audiences and offering an alternative to commercial cinema. Started in 1960 by Manuel González Casanova, the Film Archive has functioned as a space where filmmakers, film specialists and cinephiles can meet, study and collaborate on cultural and educational activities centered around film.

The archive is composed of a comprehensive film collection, focusing on restoration, recovery and reformatting. The Archive also has a collection of antique equipment showcasing technological development in film productions, which can be browsed through a virtual museum. Posters, photographs, documents, magazines, books and other prints can be seen in the library.

Online Cinema (Cine en Línea) was launched with the intention of making accessible to the public an important selection of films from the silent period to 1990. Students and interns collaborated to digitized the material, using new technologies provided by the Department of Film Activities (Departamento General de Actividades Cinematográficas).

The online catalog includes: fiction features of the silent era, México Naturalmente (a series of documentaries on the country’s biodiversity and geography) and 18 Lustros y Una Década (a historical series showing Mexico’s economic, political and cultural development). There is also a series of documentaries on Mexican painting, produced with the Archive’s assistance. Miradas al Cine Mexicano is dedicated to actors and producers relevant to the history ox Mexican film.
