Description

The National Digital Newspaper and Periodicals Archive of Mexico is dedicated to preserving, cataloguing and promoting periodicals produced from 1722 to 2010, an important heritage shaped by newspapers, magazines and gazettes depicting the country’s history in facts and topical publications.

The archive’s digitization, preservation and promotion efforts started in 2002, benefitting from technological advancement, with the goal of widening access to this important source of information. Microfilm had previously enabled users to access replicas of the archive’s sources without putting the original material at risk. This same technique was used to created a hybrid analog-digital system of preservation and reference.

The website can be used to run a simple search by title, year and location, or a more advanced search by content, keywords, phrases, publication title, country, city or state, specifying the exact date or year, language, and publication frequency. There are also three other main reference tools, such as the XIX Century Mexican Publications archive (containing publications from 1822 to 1876) and SERPREMEX (Mexican Press Service, hosting publications such as Nexos, Reforma, El Universal, La Jornada, Excelsior and Letras Libres), The IIB database can be used to reference collections, such as the Catalogue of Antique Funds, the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Bibliographical System, Educational LIterature, and XIX Century Mexican Bibliography.

Digital publications still under copyright can only be referenced at the National Newspapers and Publications Archive (Hemeroteca Nacional). The digitized archive includes publications now in the public domain, state and federal publications, publications property of UNAM and publications added with the author’s consent.
