Description

In collaboration with Google Mexico, the National Sound Library (Fonoteca Nacional) launched a call for submissions (“Mexico Suena Así - This is What Mexico Sounds Like”) from May to September 2011 resulting in a Sound Map of Mexico. To build the map, during this period users submitted sound files recorded on any device and uploaded them to an online, accessible platform.

Submissions were accepted under the following categories: natural surroundings, regional festivities, language and popular forms of speech, Mexican traditional trades, and traditional music.

The Map offers a chance to hear what different regions in Mexico sound like, raising awareness of the importance of sound preservation as a fundamental part of Mexico’s cultural identity, so current and future generations have access to their sound heritage.

The Map is currently under construction. Anyone interested in participating with an entry can do so by signing up to the platform and uploading a sound file less than 10 minutes long, as long as it fulfills the requirements of a field recording.
