El acervo de la Filmoteca está conformado por una extensa colección de películas, siendo una de sus funciones importantes la restauración, rescate de obras y la transferencia de formatos. Se ha creado también una colección de aparatos antiguos que muestran el desarrollo tecnológico en la producción cinematográfica mismo que puede ser consultado a través de un Museo virtual, mientras que los carteles, fotografías, documentos, revistas, libros y demás impresos pueden ser estudiados en su biblioteca.

The Archive also has a collection of antique equipment showcasing technological development in film productions, which can be browsed through a virtual museum. Online Cinema (Cine en Línea) was launched with the intention of making accessible to the public an important selection of films from the silent period to 1990. El catálogo en línea contiene: largometrajes de ficción de cine silente, ''México Naturalmente'' -serie de documentales que estudian la biodiversidad y la geografía del país-, ''18 Lustros y una década'' -serie de contenido histórico que muestra el desarrollo económico, político y cultural de México. Existe también una serie dedicada a la pintura mexicana con documentales realizados con apoyo de la Filmoteca. ''Miradas al Cine Mexicano'' es un espacio dedicado a los productores y actores relevantes en la historia del mismo.

La Filmoteca de la UNAM, con la idea de hacer más accesible su acervo cinematográfico a toda la comunidad y público en general, ha digitalizado material fílmico de gran valor, correspondiente al período del cine silente mexicano y al ciclo que abarca la historia del país, de 1900 a 1990 y lo exhibe a través de Cine en línea.

El material está accesible para que lo veas en los diferentes reproductores de video, dispositivos móviles y navegadores web.

Este resultado digital se debe a la labor de la Coordinación de Nuevas Tecnologías de la DGAC, y en buena medida a la valiosa colaboración de estudiantes de Servicio Social y del Programa de Becarios, además del apoyo de la Dirección General de Cómputo y de Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación de la UNAM.
