Contexto
Zone Codes fue publicado en el año de 1995 por Orphan Drift (estilizado como 0rphan drift) en el catalogo de la exposición "Charge of the lights Brigade" curada por el colectivo de arte BANK. Zone Codes fue producido como texto de acompañamiento para la instalación AnteOmega, la cual fue creada en el mismo año para la exhibición mencionada. Según información de los autores, la instalación "se realizó durante varios días directamente sobre la pared y se componía de copias de acetatos de diagramas relacionados a la neuro-filosofía, las vibraciones y estructuras celulares, además de copias a color de fotografías y piel de serpiente". El trabajo de Orphan Drift buscó hacer una "analogía entre la arquitectura y el cuerpo"donde las paredes se "convirtieron en una superficie similar a la piel en la que los componentes de la obra estuvieron incrustados" (1).
Una versión similar del manifiesto titulada Codes>alien, de la que Orphan Drift no tienen conocimiento, se encuentra publicada en la galería en linea Alt X y forma parte del listado de textos de The Day of the Manifestoes del Hybrid Workspace de la Documental X de Kassel de 1997 (2). Alt-X "Online Network", "Manufactured in Cyberspace", "Where the Digerati Meet the Literati" es un portal web “Made in USA” creado por Mark Amerika en 1993 dedicado a “desafiar a las instituciones editoriales del arte y literatura apoyando algunas de las voces y visiones más iconoclastas en el arte y la escritura contemporáneos” (3). Por su parte, el Hybrid Workspace fue un espacio dependiente de la Documental X de Kassel en el que desde el 21 de junio hasta el 28 de septiembre de 1997 participaron 11 grupos relacionados con las artes, el Internet y el activismo con diversas charlas y talleres, cada grupo tuvo una participación que duro entre 10 y 14 días (4).
Autoras
Orphan Drift es un grupo de artistas conformado en 1995 que combinan diferentes medios como el vídeo, la instalación y la literatura para producir trabajos artísticos (5). La agrupación cuenta con sedes en Londres y Oslo, donde ocasionalmente invitan a otros artistas, músicos y escritores para la realización de proyectos. Las piezas del colectivo son producidas para situarse en el espacio regularmente por comisión o contratos comerciales (5). En la actualidad, el trabajo artístico de Orphan Drift se centra en "los encuentros entre las narrativas especulativas, la ecología, el universo cuántico, el conjunto de cosmologías antiguas, la presencia y el futuro y las escalas espaciales y temporales expandidas de la presión geopolítica" (6). El trabajo del colectivo se ha presentado en diversas instituciones artísticas, entre ellas la Space Gallery, la Tate Modern y la IMT Gallery de Londres, el Museum of Modern Art de San Francisco, entre otros (6).
