The Things Network Manifesto
Everything that carries power will be connected to Internet eventually.
Controlling the network that makes this possible means controlling the world. We believe that this power should not be restricted to a few people, companies or nations. Instead this should be distributed over as many people as possible without the possibility to be taken away by anyone. We therefore founded "The Things Network".
The Things Network is an open source, free initiative with the following properties:
It connects sensors and actuators, called "Things", with transceivers called "Things Gateways" to servers called "Things Access".
The first connection is "Over The Air", the second is "Over The Net". The distributed implementation of these concepts is called "The Things Network".
Anyone shall be free to set up "Things" and connect to "Things Gateways" that may or may not be their own.
Anyone shall be free to set up "Things Gateways" and connect to "Things Access" that may or may not be their own. Their "Things Gateways" will give access to all "Things" in a net neutral manner, limited by the maximum available capacity alone.
Anyone shall be free to set up "Things Access" and allow anonymous connections from the Internet. Their "Things Access" will give access to all "Things Gateways" in a net neutral manner, limited by the maximum available capacity alone. Furthermore their "Things Access" will allow connection of other "Things Access" servers for the distribution of data.
The "Over The Air" and "Over The Net" networks shall be protocol agnostic, as long as these protocols are not proprietary, open source and free of rights.
Anyone who perpetrates a "Things Access" or a "Things Gateway" will do so free of charge for all connecting devices and servers.
Anyone making use of the network is allowed to do so for any reason or cause, possibly limited by local law, fully at own risk and realizing that services are provided "as is" and may be terminated for any reason at any moment. The use may be open for anybody, limited to customers, commercial, not-for-profit, or in any other fashion. "The Things Network" providers will not pose restrictions upon its users.
We invite you to sign this Manifesto, and uphold its principles to the best of your abilities.
Contexto
The Things Network Manifesto es un documento escrito en el año 2015 que establece una serie de propuestas de The Things Network para construir una red inalámbrica distribuida de datos a lo largo de diferentes ciudades del mundo con el fin de facilitar un Internet de las cosas público cuya propiedad y control recae en los propios usuarios(1). El manifiesto establece las reglas básicas para la construcción de la red comunitaria: 1) cualquier persona será libre de establecer un punto de acceso a la red; 2) cualquier persona será libre de conectarse anónimamente a los puntos de acceso y pasarelas de otros; 3) el acceso será gratuito; 4) cualquier persona que haga uso de la red está autorizada a hacerlo por cualquier razón o causa, posiblemente limitada por la ley local, bajo su propio riesgo(2). La red comenzó a construirse en la ciudad de Ámsterdam donde los puntos de acceso se ubicaron en espacios de trabajo comunitario, industrias de comunicación, empresas emergentes, el puerto de la ciudad, entre otros. Tras unas semanas el proyecto recibió diferentes solicitudes de otras ciudades para unirse a la red y al año de su lanzamiento, ya contaba con 200 puntos de acceso alrededor del mundo. Si bien el proyecto tiene como finalidad que cualquiera pueda conectarse a las redes de forma gratuita, la instalación del equipo para que esto pueda ser posible supuso un problema debido al relativamente alto costo que tendría para aquellos individuos que decidan instalar un punto de acceso, razón por la que el proyecto fue sometido a la plataforma de financiamiento Kickstarter donde al cabo de un mes consiguió 300,000 euros que permitieron llevar el proyecto a una mayor escala (3). En la actualidad, The Things Network cuenta con 5684 puertos de enlace alrededor del mundo(4).
Autoras
The Things Network es una iniciativa de la sociedad civil holandesa que empezó en el año 2015 cuando Wienke Giezeman (fundador de TTN) y Jonathan Carter (co-fundador de Glimworth IT) se conocieron en un Hackerspace de Amsterdam. En el Hackerspace, Carter le mostró a Giezeman una primera versión de un puerto de enlace LoRaWAN, una tecnología de radiofrecuencia de espectro libre de largo alcance, con bajo ancho de banda y baja potencia, acontecimiento que sentó las primeras ideas para la construcción de una infraestructura comunitaria abierta de Internet de las cosas. Después de conocer algunas especificaciones como la posibilidad de conectar miles de dispositivos dentro de un rango de 10 kilómetros a través de solamente 12 puntos de acceso por un costo de € 1200.00, Giezeman estuvo inmediatamente interesado (5) por lo que contacto a su compañero de negocios Johan Stokking para construir la red, pero esta vez con un enfoque diferente al de los ya establecidos por los proveedores de telecomunicaciones que construyen redes de Internet de las cosas, cerradas, basadas en protocolos propietarios y utilizando un modelo de ingresos basado en suscripciones. El nuevo enfoque de Giezeman y Stokking consistió en crear la red a través de las multitudes implicando a los ciudadanos, universidades, empresarios y desarrolladores en su construcción al conectarse entre sí usando software de código abierto. La expectativa final era crear y distribuir una red de Internet de las cosas abierta, descentralizada, autogestionada, manejada por los usuarios y perteneciente a ellos mismos, factor que dio origen al manifiesto que aquí se presenta (3).
